For this task I had to:
Part 1. Choose a game and describe it in terms of its platform, genre, interaction model, number of players, graphics, etc. It has to be a digital game. If the game is available for several platforms, or the graphical perspective can be changed in-game, mention it.
Part 2. Imagine and briefly describe how the game could change if one of its defining parameters (genre, platform, controller, number of players etc) were altered.
Ori and the Blind Forest
Ori and the Blind Forest is a single-player platform-adventure Metroidvania video game. It was developed by Moon Studios and published by Microsoft Studios.
Players control a white guardian spirit named Ori. As the game advances Ori pairs up with spirit named Sein who is actually a „light and eyes“ of the Forest Spirit Tree. Ori has the abilities to climb and jump while Sein shoots spirit flames to clear obstacles or fight creatures. Throughout the game, players have to jump between platforms and solve puzzles.
There are several saving points in the game, but in additon to those players can create „soul link“ that can be activated with energy cells, which players can collect in the game. There is also a skill points system which allows to upgrade Ori’s skills.
- The goal of the game is to restore forest which is overcome by darkness.
- Hardware platforms: PC, Xbox 360 and Xbox one.
- Software platform: Microsoft Windows
- Controllers: Mouse and keyboard, controller
- Output devices: Monitor or a screen, speakers.
- Mode: Single-player
- Platform: 2D
- Perspective: Side-scrolling
I think this game would be very different if the platform was altered from 2D to 3D third person perspective. It would change the way players would jump between platforms since they are not visible on the screen anymore. Also fighting creatures on the way would be different since some are going to fall from the top and jump at Ori. Solving puzzles would be distinct because of the new perspective of looking at walls. The way players control Ori would change as well. But I rather would play the game as it is.
